Presentation II

My educational background crosses several countries, Belgium, Germany, UK, France, Netherlands, USA, Spain and Portugal. It culminated with a PhD in Economics with a participation in a European program (ISEG-UTL/UL; MERIT in Maastricht, U. L. Pasteur, Strasbourg, SPRU Sussex).  It started with BA in Management (Liége) and BA in Applied Economics (FUCAM – Catholic University of Louvain/Mons; MA in European Economics (U. of Coimbra). I did research in Mons, Europe, Latin América and Africa.

I am currently Associate professor at Universidade Aberta and member of CEG the Center of Global Studies. My research topics are divided in four fields: economics, education and social sciences In economics I focus on human and economic development, the study of innovation, technique and technology, the study of institutions, organizations, global studies, and social change within a critical realist stance. In education, I study immersive learning, elearning and the value of education in society. Research methods and methodological and philosophical questions are the third component of my research interest and practice. Finally, the themes of sustainability, sustainable institutions, visions of sustainability and sustainable management of natural resources, and any subject crossing the three domains. I teach in BA, MA and Phd in management, sustainability and global studies. I am part of the DSSD PhD program on Sustainability and Development coordination team. I am a research member of CIEO (University of Algarve) and I collaborated with CLEPUL (U. de Lisboa) on problems related to the management of organizations, critical studies of management and sustainability, themes of economic and social development.   I highlight the role of institutions as standards, regulation and values. I also value a historical perspective on the studied phenomena with a focus on technique, technological change and more recent topics such as advanced technologies, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, automation, innovation. Finally, I have recent research on Europe, Latin American and African studies that combines my four research topics or lines of research.
